LEARN GUITAR | DOES EVERY BEGINNER ASK THE SAME QUESTION?
Every beginner have the same question – “How long does it take to learn guitar?”, that includes me. When i started learning guitar that too during 2000 I never imagined i could able to progress because there was no guitar teacher near my place plus internet hourly charges were $5.00 and i could not afford that much during that time. Also the internet speeds were limited without any YouTube or Guitar video lessons. Hence my biggest challenge was lack of access to accurate and readily available resources, but that did not stop me to achieve my goal. The story does not stop here, it rather started with the sparking question – Why I wanted to learn Guitar ?
When i was 18 years old i was reading newspaper and on one page i saw a guitarist on his knees bending the string, at that time i was not aware what note or chord he was holding to but that picture inspired me to learn guitar and I felt it was crazy but that how it happened to me.
I’VE NEVER IMAGINED THAT I WILL PLAY GUITAR
I still remember during childhood(**I was 10 years old) my sister has interest towards music and she learned Indian classical but she never gave the exams(music) I was rather away from the music enjoying playing cricket and studying but no other personal hobby. Even my father bought me a jumbo acoustic guitar and harmonium when he visited Kolkata for some official work for my sister I never tried to explore the guitar rather i used to take my pencil and bang over the strings thinking to play it like a santoor(**Indian musical intrument).
HOW I’VE DECIDED TO LEARN GUITAR?
Time passed by and finally in my 18 years of age, the guitarist picture in the newspaper grabbed my attention and I thought i will learn guitar. The guitar which my father bought me was completely damaged because of keeping it open without cover plus weather. I took it to musical store and they told me to throw that away :((**not sure whether they were lazy to repair it or wanted me to buy a new one)now to buy a new basic guitar costed me ~ $80 and it was a nightmare to ask that money from my parents because I was not sure how they would react to me. Some how i gathered the confidence and went to father asking the money to which he asked me what books i want to buy, I told him I wanted to buy a guitar, to which he laughed and said “son thats ok, i will give you money now to learn you will ask more money for tutor.”
LEARN GUITAR | LUCK SUPPORTED MY DECISION 🙂
I told my father that I will learn of my own, to which my father gave me doubtful look but he agreed to give me money. I was so happy and straight away went to musical store to buy my first guitar ~ $70(discount) – F hole Givson. The guitar was thing like electric body but was an Acoustic Guitar. Now how to learn this intrument was a challenging question before me, I visited near by Internet cafe ad started searching, during that time Yahoo Search was very famous and Some how i could able to reach a website called “www.cyberfret.com”. Believe me guys this was the site through which i learned Chords, I used to take print out of theory material and used to practice chords on everyday basis.
HOW LONG IT TOOK ME TO LEARN GUITAR?
It tooks me 6 months to learn A,B,C,D,E,F,G – major and minor chord, When I say “learn” that means i knew their positions, but still i was facing difficulty switching the chords plus strumming was out of syllabus for me :). I was scared to look at my fingers they were swollen and fingertip became white in color i felt they were infected(**kidding). But every morning i used to feel the pain over fingertips which went away gradually with time. When it happens with you i would say apply some oil or moisturizer on fingertips before you go to sleep. Now after learning major and minor chords, I took one of my favorite song, it was simple and had 4 chords – G Major, C Major, A Major and D Major, I was practicing the chords changes slowly, and yes I never used pick during that time, All i used is my thumb and index finger. This allowed me to feel the guitar and the amount of pressure that i have to maintain over the strings. If you practice daily 2-3 hours In general to learn chords(Major and Minor) it takes ~ 5-6 months to learn the chords, the more time you invest in practice the less time it takes to project the outcome result.
LEARN GUITAR | RHYTHM
Rhythm was the section which took almost two month to figure out, I learned to keep the right hand which is strumming hand very flexible, it should not be stiff rather imagine its a kind of dusting cloth on the tip of stick. That how your strumming hand should behave like, it should work like you’re dusting over strings but in a controlled manner :). Don’t try to use pick in the beginning because pick will confuse your playing style, in the beginning of guitar learning you must always use your fingers, specially index and thumb to strum.Coming back to our point, for learning rhythm what i understood is to imitate drums pattern over your strings, now what does that mean huh? Don’t worry i will explain, have you ever played drums over your school desk or dining table or any table using your both hands ??? You might have and that too for some funny reason isn’t it???
LEARN GUITAR | WHAT TO FOCUS ON?
Similarly you play the pattern using your strumming hand over strings, its tricky but once you mastered the technique its amazing plus funny too, but for others it becomes dancing moment, believe it creates that environment. Plus your friend circle increases, without becoming college topper or people starts remembering you with crazy guitarist name(like gods – The Slash, S Vai etc…), this is the power of rhythm guitar guys, it takes ~ 2-3 months to learn that, i mean basic rhythm. Over all it took me 6 months to learn guitar, when i say learn, it means – Basic major and minor chords(A,B,C,D,E,F,G) with one type of strumming pattern – Down – Up – Down – Up( i.e. Swing Rhythm).
Gradually with years you will become good because we are taking about learning the guitar, remember at the end no one can master the guitar rather you will learn new stuff everyday because you will never get satisfied with this instrument, its addictive plus amazing friend that later on becomes part of your soul(Depending on how many you buy when you learn all the techniques) :).
